As part of KiwiRail’s Auckland beautification projects, I was commissioned to transform a 160-metre-long railway corridor wall near the Mt Lebanon crossing in Henderson, Auckland.
The project was designed to bring colour, creativity and a stronger sense of place to a highly visible public space that had previously been affected by unsightly graffiti. The brief also required a number of important rail safety messages to be incorporated into the artwork.
My original design featured native New Zealand birds illustrated in a bold, graphic style, combined with vibrant colour and Pasifika-inspired patterns woven throughout the background. The aim was to create a mural that would be visually engaging from both the street and the surrounding residential area, while communicating important safety messages in a creative and accessible way.
The completed Henderson public mural transformed the long railway corridor into a colourful piece of public art, providing residents and passers-by with a much more vibrant and visually interesting environment.
